The Illinois Nature Preserves Commission

is celebrating the addition of its 500th protected site.

To honor this momentous occasion we are participating as a category in the annual photo contest hosted by OutdoorIllinois magazine. The deadline for submission of photos is August 7, 2009. After judging, photos submitted under the Nature Preserve and Land and Water Reserve category will become part of a statewide photography exhibit to be developed by the Illinois State Museum highlighting the immense natural diversity in Illinois.

There are four sites protected by the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission within the Salt Creek Greenway. These are Busse Forest, Deer Grove, Wolf Road Prairie and Salt Creek Woods. Busse Forest, Deer Grove and Salt Creek Woods are owned by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. Wolf Road Prairie is co-owned by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.
